Help identifying wooden effigy ladel

Discussion in 'Tribal Art' started by BryanTrackstand, Aug 15, 2016.

  1. Hello folks and thanks for looking. I recently inherited a large quantity of antiques of all shapes and sizes. I have two tribal-looking ladels that I would like additional information on. Rare? Value? Neither? One has the date "1853" etched with initials. Both have animal-like carved handles.

    Thanks in advance!

I don't know off the top of my head, but Google brings up similar carved wood effigy spoons described as Native American feast spoons.

@Taupou or @komokwa would probably know for sure.

Oh, Laura....don't pin the for sure on me...just yet !

The 1st does indeed look like a NA eastern Woodlands scoop,
    & the 2nd a Great Lakes spoon.

but this is one of those times where google just doesn't cut it, & I'll have to consult my books.

  5. @lauragarnet @komokwa - thanks for looking. I really appreciate your insight, komokwa. You provided good info that I can do a little digging on. Indeed, sometimes the Google fails. Just yesterday, I attempted to use "image search" and it thought my antique Jefferson battery was a green potted plant. :)

On the net ,. spoons & ladles like these are mostly museum worthy, or auction house high end finds ...but these were used by a cross section of the 1st nations folk and were made in the hundreds of thousands over a long period of time.
Many were even made for sale, so finding the exact location.....and a viable price range is not always possible.
