I think this is a Roman coin but I have not been able to find an exact match. Is anyone familiar with ancient coins that can verify it is Roman? Year? Does it have any value in this condition? Thank you.

I think I see on the edge a line that indicates that it is a cast copy. Inspect the edge carefully as there should be traces of where the two halves were joined together.

Grrrr. Windows took over and did one of those long updates just after I posted and now my computer is so slow.

    Nuff, Thanks for the link!

Thank you AF, here are some other angles of the sides.

Description: Renaissance invention of a Roman coin-type.

Curator's Comments: There are no Roman coins of this type.

    Date: 16th C. or later.

Interesting. So were these made as fakes or would these be the Franklin Mint Collector's item of the Renaissance period?

Giovanni da Cavino: "Amongst collectors of Roman coins, however, Cavino is famous for other products. Allegedly, he is one of the first coin forgers in history. Cavino’s products, called Paduans after his native city Padua, are copies of the finest Roman bronze coins and are traded for their own sake today amongst connoisseurs of the Renaissance art".

Interesting. Your piece appears to be cast plaster or stone of some type...correct?

If so, I wonder if it's a case where a copier copies the copier?

Don't know. Maybe others can add...

Anyway, good luck with it, wherever the outcome.

That line round the rim indicates it is a modernish cast copy, probably from a plaster cast of an original Paduan.
The Renaissance examples would have dies cut by the craftsmen and been struck in the same way other coins and medals were.
The surface texture is indicative of casting, but the line round the rim confirms it. No value, sorry.

I have one similar, a cast copy, in the shed. I am pretty sure all coin dealers have one or two knocking about somewhere.

More a copy of a fantasy piece. They'd never seriously fool anyone.

After reading that article, he really was like the Renaissance Franklin Mint.

If the colour is anything to go by it is probably a high zinc brass for cheapness and lower temperature casting.

    Hi,
Oh no. Now I have to pull out my two Roman coins and see if they are fake.
