Help on wood type please and info

Discussion in 'Furniture' started by James D Vaughn, Oct 2, 2021.

  1. Hi all, I just bought this old chest and I would really like to know around what year, any value, but most importantly the type of wood. There are two more rectangular drawers on top that aren't pictured because I've already began working on them. Any info, especially the type of wood this is would greatly be appreciated!!! Thanks in advance. 20211002_065302_compress18.jpg 20211002_065421_compress0.jpg 20211002_065311_compress76.jpg 20211002_065454_compress32.jpg 20211002_065302_compress18.jpg 20211002_065421_compress0.jpg 20211002_065311_compress76.jpg 20211002_065454_compress32.jpg 20211002_065302_compress18.jpg 20211002_065421_compress0.jpg 20211002_065302_compress18.jpg 20211002_065421_compress0.jpg 20211002_065311_compress76.jpg 20211002_065454_compress32.jpg

From the photos shown it looks like veneered ply with stain, to me.

You need to take more pics of the inside construction, joints etc.

The unstained portion looks a bit like birch plywood or birch something. Could be wrong though.

Front looks to be burl walnut veneer. Circa 1930. Value is dependent on where and how selling. Less than $100.00 at retail in my semi-rural Midwest neck of the woods. You might do better (or worse) depending on location and how selling.

Nicer than usual 30s walnut veneered dresser. Sadly, still not worth much, but will be very handsome restored.

  11. I've got a question. You're constantly helping me out on here and I'm super impressed with you knowledge of basically everything I've put on here. My question is this, I'm trying to make this piece as close to original as possible. I've typed in everything and anything I can to try to find a dresser/chest like this one and I've came up completely empty. I can't even find anything close to it. If you were trying to find this piece, how would you go about it, as in, should I type in something specific to search for or just search "antique burl walnut veneer dresser 8 drawer"???? Is there somewhere to go and search? As in a specific site? Sorry to bother you, but you're truly helpful!! You've already taught me more than you can imagine!!! Thanks Again!

It looks like it may have had a top section where the stain is missing. Do you have that or is there another reason it's like that?

  13. Oh, I have it, I had just taken it off to start working on that part, which has two more drawers and it also has a decorative back plate on it. It's in great shape, I just cannot find anything online even close to it. It has 8 total drawers so I was assuming I could find one like it pretty easy, but no luck so far!

A search of 1930s gentleman's dresser brings up some similar. Could also use depression era and/or tall chest.
