I have a bottle that is 125 years old and the label is becoming very brittle and chipping off easily. Does anyone know of any way to preserve the label on the bottle. Obviously tape is not an option. But some kind of spray or something to encase it on the bottle I wonder. Thank any and all for your suggestions.

A (dug) bottle forum recommended coating a crumbling label with Rhoplex. It's kinda pricey. Others say they use Elmers glue and a bit of water to thin it (I'd do very light coats with a really good brush if that's the way you choose... sometimes less is more). I think I'd check on what the bottle is, what it's worth (rare?) to make the decision between the 2 methods.

*edit: I think I'd practice it for results on a bottle out of the pantry first. LOL

    Hi,
I always coated the label with a fine brush with Maalox or some other white antiacid let it dry and lightly brush it off and then used the well watered down white Elmers a couple of thin coats. I have seen some people soak off the label let it dry and encapsulate in Mylar then glue it back on the bottle.
