A friend of mine who buys storage units at auction came by last night with 4 Rolling Stones & 1 Rod Stewart concert t-shirt shirts all from 1989 concerts that he wanted to sell me - and they were being used to wrap & protect these 2 Japanese pieces!

I ended up buying the box & it's contents from him, and I'd like to know more about these 2 pieces that someone used Rolling Stones concert tees to protect!

Can anyone tell me what they are? (watercolor? woodblock prints? hand colored prints?
They are really beautiful up close.

Can anyone tell who the artist was? And finally, how old are they?

Thanks, I appreciate any help with these!

    They are Chinese, not Japanese.
They could be prints on silk after handpainted originals.

These were sold for quite a while as decorative art. My guess is the black ink is printed on and someone added the colors by hand. The Stones shirts..:eek::eek::eek::eek: Hundred-dollar wrapping paper!

File under: Things you wish you found a lot more often. It's amazing that the black ones are intact. Black 90s cotton often dry-rots.

I thought they were newer knock offs when I first saw them, but the older tags & single stitch on end of sleeves made me realize they were indeed circa 1989!
PS , I also got a mint Rod Stewart concert t-shirt from 1989 + a 1980's Delta 'we love to fly & it shows' t-shirt and a hard rock london and hard rock Stockholm t-shirts too below are the other 2 prints I got in deal - anyone know who artist McLyon is?

It always gets me nostalgic when I find a piece of clothing marked 'Made In The USA'. I reflect on our country today and the one I grew up in.

Yep,very cool.I was talking about a particular time and place brother, not a specific commodity-but hey, finding a tiny souvenir of that era's also awesome. That was back when Walmart had big U.S. Flags painted on their exteriors-unbelievable.

Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

Hi, the name looks like M C Lyon (or M. C. Lyon) to me, and the prints appear to be copies of earlier images that I found in a book that has been digitized -- I found it in pdf form online.

Military Costume of Turkey (publ. 1818). They are plates 23 and 24 in the book. By comparing yours you can see they are not original. The artist who drew the plates in the book was Octavien d'Alvamart,
Here is a link to the pdf --

A seller of the 1818 edition of that book states that d'Alvamart was the artist. Also states that John Clark was the person who "etched in aquatint"

Thanks - so then Lyon was a school of or just a art student fan?

I'm guessing art student who saw a copy of the book. Just a guess, though.

I just found some biographical information about d'Alvimart, whose name was spelled incorrectly in my previous post. The person in the link spelled it correctly, the error was mine.

Pretty interesting, although not helpful for your questions. It does say his book was originally published in 1802, so the 1818 one I found was a later printing.
