Featured help with chinese ? carving, black forest style

hey guys this was something else i picked up yesterday

hes as happy as larry with his pipe and his john grisham novel, almost like hes just been interrupted on the lavvy

gotta be chinese right, the carving looks a bit black forest to me

any thoughts on age, wood, origin or anything else appriciated

 

He certainly looks Chinese, but I have no idea of the age or style.
I don't know if China has a Black Forest, but if it sells they'll name a region Black Forest.

Enormous. Not very Chinese, must be a laowai (foreigner).

 

If he's wood, he might be Rosewood or finished to look like Rosewood.
He doesn't look terribly old. I don't think I would put him any earlier than the 1950s if even that old.

Looks like one of the scholars. But I don't know who.

Good spy inh, that spot is a dig, and looks way lighter underneath

 

Brilliant find inh, boxwood would make sense. Very similar, especially the rounded base
