I recently purchased this oil on canvas, the back shows some age, as in pre-1900, easily. Measures 30" by 42", and very well executed. I have spent too many hours trying to ID the signature. Any help would be greatly appreciated. The kitten is a small study of the entire piece, a lot going on. The photo shows it to be lighter than it is in person. No damages present. oil 1=.jpg oil 2.jpg oil 3.jpg

I bet that's entitled 'La brocante.' Would/could you post a photograph of the back? And what were you told about it when you purchased it?

The bird at the top looks to be flying?

    I read F Gerard.
There is a French painter called François Gérard, but this isn't by him.

Art #5r.JPG Art #6rr.JPG This is the reverse. Seems legit as far as being "old". I am still stumped, but your help is being appreciated. Thank you, Craig.

I have uploaded the back photos. The estate I purchased it from had zero info on the origin, other than it was "her Mothers'".

I'm sure you know that the chalk marks may be an auction house's coding.

That is what I was thinking, but that is an old way of "inventory" marking. Nobody at an auction house would do that these days. If I was buying it at an auction and they marked it this way, I would not be happy.

Yes, before coded stickers. But better than stencils.
