    Hi

    My husband John has been given a chair as an upholstery project. We would like to know how old it is and any advice on how to treat it. I have attached a photo to assist with identification. I have other photos of the underside, legs etc if required.

    Thanks in advance,
    Jacqui

    Welcome, Jacqui. I'm not one of the furniture people, but I can promise that when they come along, they will want all the photos you have. Perhaps take this up in its own thread in the furniture forum? And use this one to tell us a bit more about yourself. :)

    Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

    Welcome, @Jacqui Clark -- Yes, more pics would be best, and posted to the Furniture forum. You may get some answers here in the Introductions, too, but it's a little difficult to tell much about the chair from that angle. :)

    Welcome! The furniture forum is definitely the place for the chair. It looks like a Victorian side chair from what I can see and definitely in need of help. Poor thing has Help Me written all over it; you can see the webbing dangling on the ground!

    Welcome to the Forum, Jacqui! :)
    It’s a Balloon back chair. Furniture folks can say more.

    @daveydempsey or @Bookahtoo
    Maybe this should be put in Furniture.

    I think your chair is late 1800s. Not hand made. Production chair. Nice
    @verybrad

    If you can add pictures straight on and the joints that would help.
    Pick "Full Image" so those with phones can see it.

    Can you show bottoms of legs? Are there holes for casters?

    Hi
    Thanks for the added pictures. Brad usually checks in the evenings. Be sure to come back in the next couple of days to see who responded.

    As for your duplicate pictures.
    Edit should still be showing for you. (It goes away after a few hours).
    Click Edit, More Options. There will be a Delete and you can delete the duplicate pictures that you don't want.

    From the underside of that seat, it kind of looks like some mice have had a Happy Home!!!!! Assume they are all gone by now!!

    From the velvet, it was recovered at least once. That stuffing isn't horsehair, so that's an indicator too. I do feel a little sad for the poor mice who are now homeless. NOT.

    Hi Jacqui:

    I'm thinking it's a balloon-back walnut chair ca. 1880s, Renaissance Revival with some Aesthetic feel as well. Nice! Could very well be a side chair that was originally part of a multi-piece parlor set.

    Feed and wax the wood, perhaps with some stain for touch-ups. No worries on reupholstering the chair; it's not worth so much that you should worry about historicism with the fabric. Probably $50 for the chair by itself here in the U.S. midwest.

    Possibly just a tad earlier.... certainly post Civil War and on in to the 1880s. Wood appears to be mahogany. Otherwise, agree completely with Ghopper.

    Thanks everyone for your help - could you let me know what type of fabric would gVe been used, and likely colours please? John would like to keep it as near to original as he can.

    I have a chair similar round back, legs are a little thinner. Mine had a caned seat originally.

    @verybrad
    What were these pegs for? Not enough holes for caning.
