I found this chair at a thrift store last year.
It's been reupholstered recently but I can't tell it's age or origin. It looks like a regency chair, but I'm not sure.

I started to tear open the underside to look for marks, but there were so many staples! I don't want to undo the bottom in case this chair is nothing special. There are lots of nail holes underneath so it has been reupholstered many times in the past. I think it is filled with straw.

I thought it was interesting that the small white dots are mother of pearl. I'm not sure what material the white stripping is made of, but definitely not ivory or wood. The stripping is mostly gone on the back of the chair, but intact around the front of the seat.
    Can any one help identify?

Has a few of the attributes of Herter Brothers - overall rectilinear Aesthetic movement lines and marquetry - but appears to be later and not by them. Probably Satinwood on the marquetry. The primary wood is mahogany.

It's missing it's castors, obviously. Can't tell what the white stringcourse decoration is without being in the room. Overall I'd say you've got a late Aesthetic movement chair ca. 1880-1890s, probably (but not necessarily) made in the northeast U.S.

Chairs are usually over-valued; in this case, if you were at an auction in the Midwest U.S., I'd expect the chair to go for $100-$150. Beautiful marquetry!!

Thanks Ghopper, for all the info! I only paid $12.00 for it, so I'm happy!

If I saw it here, late 1800s into Edwardian. Might even be English.

or French. from the straight backrest and its horizontal top it may be an altered "chaise prie dieu" for the Catholics that are more catholic than the pope.
you could kneel on the seat for prayer or stand behind it for private mass.
