    Hi,

New to the forum so apologies if the pictures are either huge or not very clear.

We found these two tankards in a box of Brass / Copper items when moving house. I think it's a 1/2 gill and 1/2 pint, and assume they're Victorian.

Aside from that, I've not been able to find out much more information on the other stamps.

If anyone has some knowledge they could pass on about the origins of these two tankards from the markings in the pictures, it would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Looks like VR for Queen Victoria. Marks for volume, weights and measures I would suppose as you have thought too.
If you don’t get the info you need here then try oldcopper.org website.
Wait for others though, people are up and about at different times.
    Welcome btw!

Capacity and verification marks - if you google this, a couple of sites have a large PDF file of this publication (prefer to not post links to PDFs):

I have a nickel Victorian gill measure from the Cock Inn, Walham Green, London.
Always good for a joke or two at parties.

Most pub liquid measures I've seen were usually made of pewter.

Gill units were also used by apothecaries.

Thanks Houseful, and thanks for all the help and suggestions provided so far.

They were in a box which belonged to my partner's grandfather. As far as we know there are no Navy connections/connections to medicine, though he could have bought them as ornaments for a snooker room.

They don't have any arrows on them, Houseful.

Thanks again for all the replies, will do a bit more research using the links provided. Would be nice to get an idea of where they were made/used from the markings.

It was all interesting to read about in the link, I’d never heard of a ‘Rum Fanny’ before!
