Can anyone help with the identity and value of this monogrammed dress?

    Thanks :)

Beautiful, but I think it is much later than Victorian.

Dress or night wear? They made some seriously gorgeous things not meant to be seen outside the bed chamber in the 1930s.

Looks more like a nightgown to me (especially if it's a person's monogrammed initials)...and later than Victorian.

    Beautiful 1930s nightgown!
They sell well on eBay for $25-$100. Unfortunately, the monogram may prevent it from reaching the higher end of that estimation.

Nightgown, 30's, and what's with that big, white spider??!!

This is outside my area of expertise, but was told by a local antique dealer that it was a Victorian dress. What you're saying makes sense. It seems too fancy to be a nightgown to me, but I'll go with your opinions as experts. Thank you both for the insight.

Re the era: think Hollywood Regency, Ginger Rogers lounging about on her satin coverd bed...

Or, if you like, my mother had several of these.

Tell your antique dealer that you have a nice bridge you'd like to sell him.

If your local antique dealer told you that was a Victorian dress, I suggest you change dealers. Someone so unknowledgeable shouldn't be selling to the public. If s/he could get this item so wrong, imagine what other misinformation s/he's spreading? (On the other hand, if his/her misinformation comes with a low price...) Anyway, it's a lovely, lovely 1930s nightgown that would have cost a fortune when it was new. (And remember it was bought during the Great Depression.) A luxury item; understandably it's monogrammed. And, by way, here's what a real Victorian nightgown would look like.

It’s hard to fathom any reputable antique dealer could think a Victorian lady would be seen in public in that!

    I agree with everyone, it's a nightgown and 1930's.
I wouldn't be disappointed though because it's gorgeous.

A friend used a frilly Victorian night gown as a wedding dress; this was 30 years ago when Victorian was in style. I wouldn't wear that Deco night gown as go-out wear, but it certainly looks like some wedding gowns they're selling now.

I'm going to say it's a 1920s-30s nightgown. Think of Mae West or Jean Harlow. Can't you just picture Jean in it?

Sheer top and all, at least prior to the Hayes Act!
