Help with signature on Repousse Pewter Plaque

Hi guys,

Can anybody help out here. I can't read this for the life of me. Anything I try and type in doesn't even come close to a real name haha.

Maybe it's recognisable. Looks like Reynolds Angels but doesn't say Reynolds!

 

C. Warchmann?

 

C. Waschman maybe?

What do the German words with the music say?

Think first word of signature is actually the Latin fecit, indicating it was made by C. Waschman, if we're reading it correctly. Of course Google only leads me right back here.

I can't sight read music. Seems like it would be part of a hymn, but image of putti bearing laurel wreaths & garlands of roses, taken with the date, suggest it celebrates someone closer in time than Jesus. Composer of the music, perhaps?

 

Are you sure it's pewter? Looks like a brass colored metal under the pewter color. Might be silvered.

If 'du' were Jesus, God, etc., would it have been 'Du' instead of 'du'? Not familiar with German conventions on this matter.

 

It says Du but I am too lazy to switch cause im not at home and writing on a tablet. in a hotel bed.
the difference is that Du is normally used when you address people directly as single person, in letters or here in a hymn.
id check the date, if someone of importance was born on that day.

 

I did check the very big name German composers. No ode, no joy.

 

C Waschmann looks about right, there a few things floating around with his name one. I didn't add a picture of the back but It is certainly older.

Silver sounds about right! He did work in that by the looks of it but I can't find any pewter.

 

did you check the text as a unity ? the hyphen is not what seems to be, its used as a muscal sign to prolong the last syllable to catch the next beat. Erschiiiiiiiiiiienen. simply drop it and use erschienen.

The composer, Lortzing, was not alive in '98 of any century, so the presentation was not to him.

 

It seems in this scene the mayor, Van Bett, is rehearsing with the citizens a song to sing for the Czar, or the carpenter, who they think is the Czar. Don't miss it:

Cool. Wonder how it came to be in a Theatermuseum. If 1904 is the date it was taken, he did not live very long after.

Signature on OP really does look like C. Waschmann, not K. On the photo he signed Karl, not Carl. The Sotheby's extravaganza is also signed fecit C. Waschmann, so maybe he was latinizing his name.
