Hi guys. I'm new here and not sure if you can help me. I have bought a couple of matching plates and I can't fathom what they are. They have hand painted floral sprays on the face. On the reverse there are incised marks. One looks a bit like a standby symbol, circle with radius and the other like a triangle. There is also a gold gilt edge which resembles semicircles repeated.
    Any help appreciated.

English. The letter and number is a pattern number. I can't quite make out the impressed mark - can you dust it with a bit of coffee or something?

I never thought of that. Camera wouldn't focus on it. I'll try that and post back thanks.

Yes, definitely English, but what I can see of those little impressed marks remind me of Minton date marks. Doesn't look like a Minton design though.

I've tried hot chocolate but doesn't seem to be happening. :banghead:

Tissue paper and a light pencil rubbing might work...

Yeah it looks similar to the 1901 mark wit a 1 in a circle but the '1' touches the circumference of the circle, and reaches to the centre. The other marks look like an isosceles triangle and a curved V

I was hoping it was a nantgarw but no such luck

I've tried that too. Sorry but not very good results.

If it was 1901 then it would have the maker's name and England on the base. I think this is earlier -- the shape and the little scalloped gilding on the rim suggest 19th c. Anything made post 1891 will have the country of origin on the base. The laws changed at that time.

Yes that's true. I'm just trying to describe the mark as the photos are unclear.

A2972 on the rim. It's probably a decorator's ID number or a design number. Not much use in itself but if we knew which country used similar marks it would help.

It'll only have country of origin if someone wanted to export it to the US. McKinley Tariff Act and all that. There's stuff after which has no origin and stuff before which does.

That design number is deffo English.

I think it is A2973 looking at the other plate. Dodgy writing. I think these might end up being a mystery. Thanks for your efforts guys.

If you're on Facebook, there's a group called something like British Pottery and Porcelain. They're very good on linking numbers to makers.
