Featured Here is a ring for jewelry lovers. Rubies and Diamonds?

I would say my Mother gave me this ring about 20 or so years ago. This rings get a huge amount of praise when I do wear it. I don't wear it much at all anymore so I decided to sell it. I was told that it was rubies and diamonds by a Jewelry store that did not even test it so I am still unaware of what the jewels are. The ring is marked 14KP GTR. Another person told me that that mark was used by JM Fox. Anyone have any more ideas. Scale reads 3.8 g. There are also diamond chips? in this ring that were hard to photograph.

 

Rubies are very expensive. I'm not sure of the general extent of their use back whenever your ring was made?

I forgot what it's called when the interior underside of the top of a ring has been hollowed out to conserve on metal? All in all, the stones don't look dense and dark enough to actually be rubies, and I'm not sure I've ever seen rubies set with diamond chips? Instead, I've seen them set with larger diamonds. I'm not saying they cannot be rubies, just that I doubt them to be rubies.

 

if those are diamonds....they are there for sparkle.....and have very little value..

Yeah they are cut like garnets, but too light in color to be valuable garnets.

 

yes...they are most often darker......but you know photo's......they can be misleading..

 

Yeah Komo, but the back of the ring does not appear to have any openings where an actual stone could shine through. So I doubt them to be rubies or garnets. Agreed the chips can still be diamond chips tho.

 

There are different grades of rubies and diamonds.

All the stones need to be tested to make sure of what they are before you sell it!

 

The stones are exactly like most round brilliants, probably hundreds of thousands of rubies,sapphires,etc. have been cut the same way. Stones don't shine thru from the bottom,they reflect light from the top of the stone and they are in prong settings. The only reason there are holes below stones on some settings to to clean the stones when they get dirty.

 

Could be lab grown rubies. They've been on the market for more than 100 years.

Any time I see 'P' as part of a gold fineness mark, my mind goes to 'plate', although I see no evidence of the wear one might expect.

 

The 'P' would be for 'plumb' gold - it's a good thing, but the ring isn't going to have much age, '70s-'80s at the earliest...

Later reference shows the firm as SAMUEL AARON/JM FOX INC., 31-00 47TH AVE, LONG ISLAND CITY NY 11101 - apparently went out of business not too long ago...

It is a real looker, Ulil.
It was probably new when your mother gave it to you. That pale pink gold was out of fashion for a long time and has only made a comeback over the last few decades. And rightly so, it is very pretty, and goes well with the rubies.

I'm with Cheryl, KP for the caratage + plumb gold, as close to the indicated fineness as you can get. I believe it is a specific American mark.
In the US an indicated fineness can have minute variations either way, plumb gold is the most accurate.
In many other countries the fineness should be at least the indicated fineness, and is usually slightly over.

The stones look like rubies to me, and as Marie said, they come in different grades. These don't look like top grade, they rarely are, and I wouldn't expect it together with those tiny diamonds. You can have them tested.
