Hopi? Bowl

Posting this bowl for a friend. He found it in a thrift shop. He showed it to me and I thought it was worth looking into more. I don’t know a lot here but would like to learn some too. At the very least it looks “vintage” to me maybe 60s/70s or earlier? Earlier? I see so much of this NA stuff that’s super ugly, modern, hand painted green ware. This one is really rustic and tactile. I believe it’s Hopi but could be wrong. Would like to share some of your opinions with him.

Yes, it's Hopi. Could be a little earlier, since by the late 1960s/early 1970s most Hopi potters were signing their work, with hallmarks, if not their names.

Dating Hopi pottery is difficult, since they are very traditional in their style, and continue the same general look for years. It looks like that may be a .75 price written on the bottom, which may be a clue to when it was sold.

 

Thanks for sharing. I figured it would take a highly trained eye to pin down a more exact era, since as you mentioned it’s not like the style changed a lot. He wound up listing it and selling it very soon after. Potentially left some money on the table but maybe not. He was happy with the margin since it was picked up for a few bucks. It’s one I wouldn’t have minded adding to my collection but it was gone in a flash.
