The style of this 4.5" Hopi pot looks an little older to me.

Can anyone help with reading the name?

    Thanks!

There is a Hopi potter named "Mashongisic" listed in Gregory Schaaf's book "Hopi-Tewa Pottery, 500 Artist Biographies," the only information given, however, is that they were active in the 1950s, and made black & red on yellow bowls.

    (And that in 1981, a similar bowl, ca. 1950 (2 3/4 x 5 1/4) was offered for sale at $75 by T.N. Luther, "American Indian Art," catalog #A2-1981, item #P40, p.86.)

It looks like the last "e" was possibly added by a former owner. It doesn't appear to match the rest of the signature. I have seen this signature before, and even have a pot signed, (without the added "e,") so it would appear that is the problem.

Interesting! The last 'e' looks to me to have been painted at the same time as the rest. I think the picture I took and the letter being on the curved part of the bottom make it look different. Maybe there was some variation in anglicizing a Tewa name.

It's always an honor when you help me ID a pot.
