Another one of my Amsterdam School brooches, ca 1920-25.
Love the hammered round floral shape, the minimalist engraving, and there is a nice Czech moonstone/Mondschein glass cab in the centre.
Problem is, the glass cab probably came loose at some point, and someone glued it back using hot melt glue. Result, the usual blobs of amateur glueing.
So I want to do a proper glue job on it, but first I have to remove the cab safely.

Do you think the cab would survive the heat needed to remove it?
Would it be better to soak it in alcohol?

Photos are blurry due to shaking hands.:shame: And the moonstone glass actually has a reddish glow in it which came out yellowish in the photos.

    Thank you for looking.:)

Alcohol should not be a problem for either the stone or metal :)

Thanks, Marie.:) I prefer to use alcohol anyway, less hassle, and no burns on my butterfingers.:nurse: The brooch will be treated to a nice bath tomorrow.

    I would use Acetone.

My alcohol is in the fridge :hilarious:

I've pried things out of hot glue with a sewing needle before. It doesn't always take much work.

Hope it goes perfectly! Be sure to show "after" photos if it comes out to your liking! :)

Yes, try pure acetone (NOT fingernail polish remover) it usually does a good job dissolving glues/adhesives.
A 30 minute soak should tell you if it's woking.

Lighter fluid works like magic on fabric that has come in contact with hot glue. I usually "work up to it" on other items, trying alcohol, acetone, and if one of those doesn't work, lighter fluid usually does.

True but lighter fluid stinks to high heaven.
Kinda like that label remover "GOOF OFF" - that smells pretty bad too

It’s a true diamond in the rough. It’s going to come out great! Nice Hunting!

No bottles of Chablis were harmed during the brooch's bath.:playful:

Thanks, the cab has been soaking for a couple of hours. No movement yet, but the blobs around it have softened enough for me to remove them with a blunt needle.
But I want the cab off, because it is slightly off centre and covers part of the engraving. I have to tread carefully, because I suspect it is by Hendrik Methorst, which would mean a nice value. A silver Methorst brooch like mine in the thread below sold for close to 700 euro.:woot:

    I will.:)
    Thanks, inh.
