t's just an inexpensive pin that I'm putting up on ebay, but I don't even know how to describe her. Who is she supposed to be? A black woman with a scarf? And why does the scarf point above her head? : puzzled : (why don't we have a puzzled emoticon...lol).

1920s retro. She's wearing a cloche hat. And think she's supposed to "read" as a silhouette rather than a member of any ethnic group. Your pin likely dates to the 1970s.

Apparently these are referred to as "flapper pins." Here's another.

On second glance... Think she's meant to be wearing a turban. No matter. Same era. Here's an Erté illustration of one; think extension is meant to be a stylized feather.

I prefer the Erte look to the ball cap look I see today.

If you'd like to learn more about the history of the turban (as women's fashion accessory,) you'll find this of interest.

I agree on turban: and they were part of Jacobean costumes, let alone flapper.

Turban, or more likely (we think) headband, either way we'd say the "fin" (nice one, komokwa) on the pin is meant to represent the cockade often seen adorning either piece of headwear -- the cockade usually worn over one ear, but often front and centre.

Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

Oh, I keep forgetting we have something like that. I'll be using it from now on. Thank you!

    Thanks for the additional responses.

Scoutshouse, I can access the picture of the back of the pin right now, but it looks like a fairly newer pin closure....70's to present type.
