I hate to bother you good people here with a non-antique question again, but I have gotten no responses from the vintage doll board I use. I know this is supposed to be a Zippy the Monkey doll from the Howdy Doody show. There are hundreds of examples on the internet but none of them has the ears and face plastic area connected, they all show faces with a strip of fur between the face and ears. Could this just be a knock off? And if it was, I would think there would be others out there. No tags.
That is one thing to check I hadn't thought of. Some of these rubber faced dolls sell pretty well so good to do your research. If not Zippy, if not homemade, could just be some other maker vintage rubber faced monkey. You've probably done this, but be sure to check for any kind of tag down the body, etc. My thoughts are that these clothes are not original to the doll. The shirt looks to be flannel and worn down, possibly pajamas (as if worn by an very young child first). Be sure to take a good look under the fabric, and check Cluttered's suggestion too. If you search "vintage rubber faced monkey" you will pull up a bunch of different styles on Ebay. These were a thing for a time. I always found them a bit scary looking, but some makers definitely have a following.
Zippy was actually a chimpanzee (ape), not a monkey. Apes don't have tails, and it appears that your guy does have a tail.
Definitely no tags, have taken clothes off and looked everywhere. Can't really see the stitches beacause of the fir and they are tight. I think clothes home made. So maybe he is just a old monkey doll. Thanks for all the input!
