This huge jug stands over 34cm high and is tin glazed earthenware. It is finely hand painted and well modelled. It has an impressed maker’s mark and an incised signature.

The mark looks to be EDELFAYANCE IMG_0456.jpeg IMG_0457.jpeg IMG_0458.jpeg but searches have turned up only EDEL Keramik and I’ve had no luck with the incised signature.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks in advance

    John

    I read Anton Lang.
Edel, literally noble, means it has quality.

I had an aunt named Edel. I thought it was just a Norwegian name, but now I will think of her as "noble!" Yes, I see Anton Lang, too.

Here's some info from the description: Anton Lang (1878-1938) was a renowned German potter who established his studio in Westerwald, Germany, in the early 20th century. His work was characterized by its earthenware pieces with speckled yellow slip under a clear glaze and green-colored sprigged decoration. This distinctive style became a hallmark of the Anton Lang pottery studio.
Karl Lang (1903-1990) was Anton Lang's son and successor. He took over the pottery studio around 1935 and continued to produce high-quality pottery in the traditional style established by his father.
They both used a similar signature or marking, as the family business maintained a strong sense of continuity.

That is so nice.:) Edel could have been short for another name, for instance there is a German girl's name Edeltraut, which means noble strength in old Germanic. The French name Adelaide, also used in English, has a similar Germanic 'Edel' origin.

Edeltraut isn't used here, but I know a few Adelaides.
