    ....but I'm hoping someone can tell me what it's actually called and how old it might be. Growing up, we all called it "the thing in the hall." :p

    Looks like a chimaera put together from parts of other old desks & cabinets, in my completely uninformed opinion.

    It's informally (but widely) known as a side-by-side. Yours is oak ca. 1910. They come in various combinations of shelves, desks, and display cabinets. Check E-Boo to see other examples.

    Side-by-side secretary/china cabinet (or bookcase) and agree with Ghopper on date.
