I did not even know that was possible. I don't think it's the original top either. So my question is, was this probably valuable for sentimental reasons or was it valuable enough to have it repaired??

I've never seen a top like that.....
We encounter staples here from time to time , and usually on cherished items ...

Chinese have been using staples since the ancient times to repair pottery.

It's very heavy and about 16 inches tall. I can just imagine the moment it broke however long ago it was..

Positive the lid doesn't belong to the vase.

It's a marriage for sure; the vase may have been a lidded jar, but it didn't have that lid.

There's a story that a Japanese shogun sent a favorite cup to China for repair and was given back the piece stapled together. He didn't like it, so he asked local artisan to glue back the pieces with resin and gold. Thus, Kitsungi became an art form.

This is a Western repair, I'd guess early 20thc

The vase is transfer printed. so, its most likely from the first half of the 20th century or even later

I agree, the staples are a relatively late repair. Always nice to see a stapled piece though.:)
The jar would have had a matching porcelain lid. The current one is clearly a marriage. I think someone was inspired by the Dutch tradition of silver lids and mounts on Chinese porcelain:

Unlike the lovely example above, the OP's lid doesn't fit and the designs aren't complimentary.

@Rec I'm just learning all this.. so if I can feel each detail of the design that means it's transferred??

I'm afraid Rec is incorrect on that point Laura. Not transfer printed at all.

I have a piece of heavy purple New England Glass that was stapled back together, and a Moser rainbow ewer/decanter 16 inches tall with the handle stapled on. I'm proud to have these pieces that their owner thought enough of to have them repaired.

Yes, their (monetary) value is diminished, but they are still imposing to look at.
