I've had this plate for several years and I've periodically tried to find something similar without any success. But today I found an auction listing from South Dublin Auction that had a platter with the same pattern. They described it as "18th century sticky pottery". What is sticky pottery and is it really from the 18th century.

I googled 18th century sticky pottery and I found that the same auction house gave the same description to a Chinese plate. 2003-12-31 23.00.00-8.jpg 2003-12-31 23.00.00-9.jpg 2003-12-31 23.00.00-10.jpg 2003-12-31 23.00.00-12.jpg

My plate is is definitely old but I wouldn't have guessed that it was that old. It is translucent - 8.25" in diameter. That thing on the back is the remains of a very old label. The plate is bright white and the pattern is silver grey.

Where is this plate from? What is it made of? and what would the date be?

You might look up "dendritic slip".

I'm guessing their "sticky" just means stick-like.

There were various patterns of seaweed and frond (dendritic as noted above) patterns in the 19th century. Transferware on some white earthenware body, primarily, I think.

Here is an example of a similar pattern called Sea Leaf by Samuel Alcock from Snyder's Romantic Staffordshire Ceramics book.

The pattern is consistent across the three sides and would appear to be transfer printed - definitely not dendritic slip. I've owned a few of those and am familiar with the technique.
