    Hello friends,

I would be curious to understand the meaning, the provenance, and the dating of this solid brass bell.

Externally there are the following writings:

"AQVILA AGNVS X PELICANVS LEO X"

Below these writings, there are images of related animals

Inside the bell we find "MADE IN ENGLAND"

    height 5.5 cm

    diameter 5.5 cm

    Thanks a lot

    Its called a Sanctuary Bell.
    The text is Latin

In English it means Aguila (The Eagle Symbol of St. John); Agnus (The Lamb symbol of the Lamb of God or St. Agnus); Pelicanus (The Pelican symbol of the Eucharist the sacrifice of the Mass - According to medieval legend, the pelican pierces it's own breast to feed it's young, therefore giving it's life blood to save it's own.

Leo the Lion symbolizing St. Mark.

If you Google AQVILA AGNVS X PELICANVS LEO X there are lots of references to the brass bells.

Thanks so much for the info.
But who was the one using it?
Why they created this kind of Sanctuary Bell, for which purpose ?
    During celebrations?

    Thanks

It is just a name. Yours is something people have in their homes, just like religious statues, etc. It is a copy of an older bell.

The sanctuary bell is usually rung by an altar boy, during the consecration of the host at Mass. Three separate times.

We would call that an altar bell or sanctus bell, often multiple bells together.
I was always told a sanctuary bell is used to generally honour God, wherever it may be. I still have two antique 'Evangelist' sanctuary bells for that purpose that were passed down the family, for home use.

Jivvy the research is my favorite

For future reference, with items like this, most cameras are better at capturing a clear image when you use a dark background.

If you're Catholic, there is only one sanctuary bell. It is rung at the most sacred part of the Mass, when the priest takes the monstrance from the sanctuary and raises it three times to sanctify the "new" communion wafers. I can still vaguely remember the Latin.

This Roman Catholic theologian makes the distinction between the two, as she was taught. Of course RC theologians are the thorn in the side of the Mother Church, so....;)
