    Hello,

I need some help identifying what these carved blue beads are made of. The beads are room temperature. I believe the pearls are genuine. They are semi round and slightly irregular in shape. They are cold to the touch and feel gritty if I run them along the edge of my teeth. Is there any way to know what type of pearls these are? I know there’s a variety of freshwater and saltwater pearls, and it would be nice to have a better idea about these. I thought these might be freshwater pearls because of their slightly irregular shape and size - about 2 mm in diameter. The clasp is stamped “14K PJS” if that is useful.

Thank you, I really appreciate the help!

That looks like a good match! It appears to be a popular mineral for carvings too. Thank you Bronwen

I noted that look too & remarked on it to someone looking over my shoulder last night. If I could handle it, I'd have better idea. Recommendations to OP for differentiating stone from pottery?

Yes, cultured freshwater pearls, not terribly expensive to buy by the strand for beading.

Will add that it looks home made & has now stretched out in the center section so that a cap meant to dress up the hole in the focal bead is floating off to the side.

Might have been a pearl necklace with that clasp & someone added the center bit, badly.

Hm. Differentiation. This looks as though the edges are slightly worn back, showing the underglaze. If pottery of this kind, any wee chips would show that granular look that faience has, rather than smoother crystalline. It wouldn't feel as cold as either stone or glass and would warm up a bit faster. Carved stone to me would be crisper and you might get veining. Pottery beads slightly lighter for size.

Yeah, I wish I could get my paws on that.

The clasp could have been produced a year ago, photo too small.

I agree the blue beads look like some kind of glazed ceramic. But if they are room temperature, I suspect resin. Like the 'turquoise' snuff bottles coming out of China, all resin.
They look nice with the pearls though, but the person who crafted it could have shortened the wire. I suspect they used two pearl bracelets.

I don't think it is ceramic. My brother is a potter and he said it wasn't when he examined it. The carved beads are also blue on the inside which I wouldnt expect for a ceramic bead.

Resin is a good possibility. I think it is either resin or amazonite. Since it is room temperature I'm leaning more towards resin. I think I will go ahead and shorten up the wire so it looks better!

There were a number of "spam" posts made last night by a fly by night porn merchant. Davey got rid of them and the posts they made.

Spent a chunk of time yesterday cleaning out spam messages to my web site. Porn offers account for the vast majority, followed by the related offers of drugs for erectile dysfunction. Others offer me business loans, term paper writing, ways to get around spam filters. What the 109 bogus registrations were trying to accomplish, I am not savvy enough to know. And the many messages in Russian only occasionally have words in them I can readily make out; they just get trashed.

What a hassle. Do they even make money off of those cons anymore?? I only have to deal with spam messages on my email. Thankfully gmail deals with most of them for me, but I still find spam emails in my inbox from time to time.
