I would like to enlist your help in identifying this figurine .figurine is attached to a square marble block with 2 metal rusty pins. Its 15cm long and weights 750gr.
I coundt find any marks but i think its japanese. It depicts a cranebird eating some cherry from a cherry tree with blossom.

can anyone any idea who made this and when?
is it japanese or made in europe?
What kind of material is it made?
would be the value affected negatively if i repaint it ? What kind of paint shoud i use ?

I like this. Not sure if Japanese or just in the Japanese (japonisme) style. I would guess brass/bronze/japanese mixed metal type composition. I wouldn't get paint anywhere near it, I think it's beautiful with a nice patina as is.

Whether the base is marble or onyx, it has a made in the past 50 yrs Italian look to me. I've seen similar birds on branches made of ceramics on Italian pieces. As for being Japanese, do the Japanese use stone with screws for bases?

BTW: It is easy to confuse marble and onyx, but as they might look similar, their environment of formation is entirely different. Marble is a metamorphic rock, while onyx is a form of chalcedony quartzite. To visually compare, Google "marble vs onyx".

It doesn't need repainting. It was designed to be as is. And any attempt to repaint surface would destroy its value.
