Identify age and maker of chair?

Hi Sarah!

These chairs were widely made across the U.S......I'm assuming that's where you are? The "M" may refer to a number of things, i.e. an internal inventory number, a date (perhaps 1900?) or even the first initial of the maker. I'm inclined to go with the internal inventory explanation.

Having said all that, I'd say your chair is right around 1900, say 1890 to 1910, probably later rather than earlier. I can see a very handsome chair if you choose to restore it, but be aware: the "brown furniture" antique market has tanked (though I continue to love it) and the value of your chair, even if it were restored to a "T," would probably not exceed $50.00.

So restoration would be a labor of love, although you'd have a very attractive chair at the end of it.

 

Hi, I am actually in the U.K. and I have a pair if these chairs, they have obviously been stored in a barn or shed, have cleaned one up and it’s actually ebonised wood

 

I'd have guessed England, in the same period, owed to the close-set turned spindles. The "M" as a stamp would generally be the cabinetmaker's mark, to identify the assembler to the factory inspector.
