Long time lurker but my first post. I found these at an estate sale and asked the lady what they were and she said they were victorian ladies dumbbells...I though too myself that I doubt womens fitness was that popular in the the early 1900s...lol. I was thinking they might be knife rests? They are pretty big though...about 6.25 inches long, cast iron and weigh about 2.10 pounds. Any ideas? Thanks!!

Welcome, colonelmustard! As much as I don't want to think that these were exercise "dumbbells," I seriously do not think they were knife rests either. Maybe another member can find something to confirm one or the other.

Oh my gosh...look at that photo! Thanks for the reply. There are no markings as to weight and such and they have the star pattern on the handles and ends. How very interesting. Thanks again

Ruth Gordon's play, "The Actress," filmed with title "Years Ago;" dumbells figure into this period piece!

Welcome colonel. As a woman who uses dumbbells, I think the raised impression in the middle would make them impractical. Your calluses would look very strange. I think they may have to do with curtains or other materials that would blow in the wind. Perhaps a cord wrapped around them. This is purely a guess.

Thank you. Yes that spindle shape in the middle with the star impression would not be comfortable.

That is quite a pair of eyes you have! I didn't even see that. Unfortunately just adds to the mystery as it reads "Pat Pend"

I think they are stamps, dunno whether culinary or architectural, but you press them into a mud-consistency material to leave an impression. The wide top end makes it easy to strike the top with a mallet if more force is required. Maybe, baby.
