I'm so confused about this ring

    Hi,

I got this ring in a jewellery job lot on eBay and I am so confused about its origin. There are no markings or hallmarks. It looks to be tarnished silver or nickel with the remnants of some kind of plating. I'm most confused about the style because I've never seen a ring that looks like this before. It has a hand-made look to it with tiny flower details and filigree patterns. There is a large deep red stone in the middle. Can anyone help me to date or identify this ring please?

Looks like the silver plate has worn off the brass type metal base. Is it also worn off on the inside of the band?

No, weirdly enough, the silver is the base. The ring actually looked completely brass when I got it but a thorough clean exposed the silver-tone base. It would be very unusual to plate silver, which is why I think it could be nickel. The inside of the band is silver.

    Welcome Meg.
It is a lovely ring. Worth polishing a bit more to see what happens.
The style and the squarish prongs or claws of the mount make me think of southern German and Austrian jewellery, of a style that is worn with the local costumes.
These are still extremely popular in that region, and they make rings like this one in silver and garnet as well as silverplated and garnet glass.
Yours is an older, well made ring.

Try the German ebay, ebay.de, for 'Trachtenring', or google 'Trachtenring'.
