This was a gift given to my husband years ago. We love it but we were hoping that maybe someone knows something about it. It came from an estate sale. There aren't any distinguishing marks on it. I can tell at some point someone must have welded the base back on the legs. thumbnail.jpg 2.jpg 3.jpg 4.jpg 5.jpg 6.jpg 7.jpg Thanks!

    Hi Seaweed, and welcome.
I think you have a Japanese bronze urn, possibly from the Meiji period (1868-1912). As with many things Asian, it might be a later copy, mid 20th Century, but the wear and patina suggest the early 20th Century. It looks like someone has hot-soldered the legs back onto the base.
The panels around the sides sometimes represent the 4 seasons, but yours appears to have 6 panels. In Japan, they sometimes represented New Year as a 5th season, and seasons are also divided into 3 periods. Insects are sometimes used to symbolise the seasons e.g. cicadas represent summer and crickets autumn etc. Check for these insects within the panels, they might tell a story. This is a link to some interesting information: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kigo
The foo dog lid and dragon handles are also typically Japanese, although more generally associated with China.
I have attached a few images below for reference, but you will find lots on MrG search (click images) and urns like this do appear occasionally on eBay. Auction houses offer similar urns from time to time and you might keep an eye out there in your research.
I'm sure one of the other members will be able to add lots more information, but like you, I absolutely love it. It has an elegant genuine look. Enjoy. ;)
