This is 1 of 3 cool paintings I found & bought at a local thrift store today - what the heck does it mean?
    Who did it?
    Thoughts?
    Thanks all.

I think you've got a good one - hang on to this one ..not everyone's taste but a sincere piece of work, not some tourist schlock. Worth checking out this artist's other stuff.

    Bold stuff! I like it!

also possibly an early work by Emmanuel Jean Baptiste, or good find!

10000 carreaux de terre par permission une botte 200 lieue

    Google translate comes up with:
10,000 earth tiles by permission a 200 league boot.

Maybe one of our French-speaking members can clarify...

Thanks - I hope so; I got 3 paintings for $210; more than I could afford but they were … there was something about them so I gambled!

The Boots theory looks right. I love the piece myself. The General's name had NO matches in Google (?) and e.j.b. seems to bring up a modern day person or someone who's artistic style varies greatly from this example.
It really does look special, though.

[IMG] [IMG][IMG] That the General only has one boot?
    That is a mystery.

Jean Baptiste Edger is a different name than I was seeing. I thought it was Emmanuel Jean Baptiste?

    Then it is TOTALLY him!

I found many examples on Invaluable and that’s the name they gave. Maybe it’s Edger Jean Baptiste but not Emmanuel.
    Can’t get it to link.

I screwed up though - I had an offer for $1,000 from Chicago_Haitian_art_gallery and I countered with $1,500 because of the artist & the subject, but the person sent me a message saying he was sure I'd get it but with all the craziness going on he was going to have to pass. After I read that I messaged him & agreed with the virus and everything I couldn't expect what I wanted and told him if he countered with his original offer I would accept it - he wrote me back saying he was sorry but his wife went crazy about him spending that kind of money now & then he thanked me for not accepting the $1,000 offer!
So when I got an offer for $750 the next day I accepted (humbly)!!
