Haven't posted here in quite some time due to obvious reasons! However, surfing eBay I came across a stickpin that I actually had acquired before all this mess with covid. I never really thought much of it and thought it was just glued by an amateur. Now that I found another one I guess I was wrong and it was intentionally done like this! It a nice garnet glued down to a 14k stickpin. When poked into a piece of clothing you see no gold at all because the garnet overreaches all edges. It is quite a unique design! Here is another example https://www.ebay.com/itm/Fine-Quality-c1885-Natural-Garnet-10K-Gold-Stickpins/143590915858

It's set? How so? Is it cut so that the garnet is inside of the setting?

How do you know it's a rhodolite garnet?

And because of this particular hue (in pic #3) they show among all other sorts of garnets:rolleyes::cyclops:
And as I knew what your opals in your thread were from only one pic...

    Any comment about the mounting?

Yes, the setting bezel holds an oval part of the garnet smaller than the upper cabochon part. The garnet is specially cut for this kind of mounting and isn’t a simple flat back cabochon.
I have somewhere an antique pair of small cuff links made that way, will post pics when found:joyful:

Here they are (rolled gold and rhodolite garnets), together with french jet mourning earrings open back same cut. Resized_20200429_150104_1512296830751347.jpeg Resized_20200429_145739_1512296675853694.jpeg

Garnets are a mixed up family of stones,in a lot of cases without testing it's just a guess. What stone is this...

    Me not a rock hound!
Tourmaline, amethyst, fluorite would be my candidates, BUT... I'm SURE you are showing there a more unusual stone...;)

I'm better at "guessing" what stone is in antique jewellery:rolleyes:

Using my "guesses", "feelings", and, above all, the clues given by my acquired knowledge in 40 years of learning from collecting and handling thousands of antique pieces.

They are rhodolite garnets from the Cowee Valley North Carolina area where they were discovered and named.

Rhodolite garnets are also called Almandine, which are used since at least 18th century.
If rhodolite name is only used for garnets coming from Cowee Valley North Carolina, then I'll call Spartcom 5's and mine on my cuff links ALMANDINE:D

Rhodolite garnets are not called Almadine as they are a mixture of pyrope and almadine garnet with a wide range of color.Rhodolite garnets are found in many locations around the world, but just looking at a photo no one can say exactly what type of garnet it is.

I have no decisive conclusion about what the stone is, but if it is as pink as it looks in the last photo, had to wonder if it's tourmaline. I'm not quarreling with some species of garnet, just raising another possibility solely based on color.
