Featured interesting Balinese sculpture

Just found this interesting Balinese sculpture with a seed position reminiscent of Pita Maha sculptures,,,,,,,it has at one point been painted.

Could it be a Pita Maha piece,,,, ? I am tempted to buy and take it home to clean the paint off

It is an interesting piece, Rene, worth researching.
But it is not in Balinese Art Deco style, and certainly not Pita Maha, which is only a select, small part of Balinese Art Deco, during a short period of Balinese Art Deco history.

 

I'm thinking, maybe made by one of the Western artists who worked on Bali at the time?

 

For goodness sake, feed him while he's being cleaned! Poor thing!

In order for something to be a Pita Maha piece, it would have to be signed by a recognized member of Pita Maha. Many beautiful Balinese sculptures were made by people who were not Pita Maha members, and many were never even signed.
I only have one Balinese Art Deco piece that is signed by a member of Pita Maha. Is it my favourite or my most valuable? No, it isn't.

In short, if it isn't signed by a member of Pita Maha, you can't call it Pita Maha.

If you want to buy unsigned pieces of Pita Maha quality, the first thing you can ask yourself is, would this piece have been given the go-ahead by the critical eyes of the board of Pita Maha?
I love Bali Art Deco, but don't fuss too much about Pita Maha, or only buying art that was made in Mas. I just buy what I like. Art has to be of quality and 'speak' to me.
