Hey folks, found this at the local recycling centre.

It was all locked up and felt full. The guy was giving me alot of fanny about it being from a stamp collector. But bought it as I loved the box (£25). It felt a bit like baggage battles ;)

Managed to get it open with a box of old keys I have(haven't gone through yet, looks mostly family type stuff)

Any info / thoughts on the box would be nice

It is beautiful. I'd say English, ca 1890-1900. Could be wrong, so let's wait for the others.:)

the box is very nice......& my 1st thought was Black Forest Germany.........

Age is a prickly pickle ....the outside looks old....the inside and underneath...look newer....
What dates are on the papers inside...?

I'd think 19th C, certainly English, and probably done by a very competent amateur.

It's got a very unusual 17th century revival vibe to it.

And we know the Victorians loved the 17th century stuff.

Very handsome. Liked Ownedbybear said, probably done by a very competent amateur.

    My kind of box.

Was trying to find a good photo example with both a good face & hair parted down the middle, but nothing wanted to come along. The central medallion I think is very influenced by Roman cameos with the head of Cupid. Rings with them were so popular there are still many on the market, both still in their original settings or in Georgian 'collectors' mounts' like this one:

    Ivy vines were another widespread element on engraved gems;

The choice of decoration supports a late Georgian/early Victorian time period, when the mania for engraved gem collecting was raging. With that good lock, would have been just the right place for a gentleman to keep his billets doux discreetly.

Nice box, it is carved in the 17th century style which was very popular in victorian england but the "north wind" feature kind of gives the game away.

    Cool, good to know james

the contents will pay over the £25 which is good news

There was a couple of nice bits at the bottom

9ct victorian bracelet in case (with damage) and some other things, Will post a few pics tomoz

The correspondence and clippings inside go right through the 20th century komo
