    Hello
    I live in England and so does the seller.

    Sellers description;
    A most beautiful and interesting English antique pewter plate. Marked to the top and bears the date 1691.

    Measurements

    Diameter = 21.5 cm.
    Height = 1.6 cm.

    Condition

    Heavy patina, scratching and wear commensurate with age. Dented area (see photos). No cracks or chips.

    Do you think it is genuine?

    Thanks

    The date is most often the year in which the maker was established, not necessarily the year in which the item was made.

    Would it be worth it for someone to even try to fake such a plate?

    Wondering the same issue.

    What is the asking price? This may be helpful in the determination.

    It appears to be French and the marks are consistent with 18th C.

    This is a bit of information from Tardy's book Poinçons d'Etain.

    The 1691 crown C mark should be from the town. If you can make out the letters on the other side you may be able to tie it to there. I've added a few photos of the town marks but there are quite a few more with crowned C 1691. I can add them if you wish to pursue the search.

    The other mark of crowned hammer would be the maker, initials L M or I M with a U looking thing below, is not shown. There are many pages of crowned hammer marks but not this one. The closest is the hammer without the crown and I M U however, sadly, the don't identify it.

    I see, I did not think about that. But from what I have seen so far this plate does fit the late 17th-century pewter plate style

    If it's not genuine, then that's the best fake wear I've ever seen.

    So the crown with the date 1691 is called the town or the maker's mark? And the word around it is the name of the town where it was made? I will try to identify what it is here. Thanks for the images

    The crown C with 1691 relates to the town. There are many French towns using that portion of the mark with the town name on the right side.

    The makers mark is the crowned hammer.

    I'm sure I don't know. I have a very small collection of old pewter and several books but am nothing near expert, just interested:).

    It looks old to me but beat up. (If it were me I'd want some reason to lay out that kind of money such as it's extremely rare maker or it fits with my specific collecting interest or it's a very rare form etc )

    Welcome back Dhruv ! Did you ever find a dated Tudor/Elizabethan chair ?
    I'd pay the money if it was John Dee's Scrying Bowl (but he'd a been clay by 1690).
