There are 3 different types for your coin some with the Dutch Legend, Der Belgen, and some with the French Legend, Des Belges.
Of the French Legend the 1862 is worth about $0.50 , then there is a 1862 over 61
(the 62 is actually struck over 61) which is worth $4.
Then there is a 1862 with a dot after the word "Premier" worth about $3.
Values are catalog, over here they don`t sell unless exceptional condition.
    It is made of copper-nickel.

    Ask me another :D

We really don't get many coin questions, but I'll bet some members have interesting stuff tucked away that they don't know much about.
And pretty well everything has a story attached, that's why a few pounds of mixed foreign coins, although of merely nominal value can be so eye opening to any kid with an enquiring mind, geography and history without tests or textbooks.

Of course, there's always the kids that have minds no lever can open.

I just bought 3 albums of coins this weekend that had been left decaying in a garden shed for the last 35 years.
They were in uPVC pockets that had perished and gone all gooey and green, I had to cut most of them free.
Got about 500 coins from all over the world, some scarce French coppers and about 50 silver coins.
The coppers are soaking in olive oil as I type.

Of the silvers I got 21 US silver Quarters,14 silver dimes, 3 silver war Nickels and 3 Buffalo Nickels including a 1913.

Not shown are 3 SLQ`s and numerous banknotes and £20 in spendable cash.
All bought for £40 and an hours travelling :D

That's OK, we don't mind what you do to US coins :)

Nice collection, but it's a real shame what those plastic pockets do to coins and how tedious it is to buy a large quantity and spend hours removing the horrible sticky things.

There is always the chance of finding something really good that the original collector may not have recognised.

.have you gone through EVERY coin in that monster tub?

Only up to a point. A quick skim for unusually good condition, which is as near unused as make no difference, and all the pre decimal (1967 back to Victorian and earlier) small change just gets heaped in the tub because it's not really worth enough to cover the postage to anywhere.

Around 2000, I did have an American jeweller buy great heaps of those white metal sixpences, 10,000 at a time (25 Kilos) for some jewellery project that I think was for brides (something old, something new..........and a sixpence to put in her shoe) and I used to see a bloke who'd take all the pennies off me, but for the last 10years or so they have just been piling up.

Some day, some day. The tub is now too heavy to move anyway, so I'd have to start with a bucket and shovel.

There are probably loads of young collectors who would like to rummage through it but nowadays it's asking for trouble to ask young boys if they'd like to come to your shed and sort through your coins. :)

It's not really costing me money, you buy a large hoard or collection and simply discount all the very common stuff, your offer winds up being for the stuff you want only.

    Hi Af,
I used to give all the brides I knew a sixpence for her shoe. Then all of a sudden they were gone and up in price.
