Could somebody tell me if this symbol on the bottom of a tea set I bought recently is Chinese or Japanese. Most of the items are inscribed as per the second photo
    Thanks

What do the front look like - a lot of the times the decoration can tell you the origin. The mark underglaze red certainly looks Japanese.

I'm with Laura, Japanese. Would love to see more of the set though.

    And very much Kutani.
It always helps if you post photos of the item(s), most of us would have said Kutani straight away, without seeing the mark.

Geisha Girl pattern, many different types.

Hold the cup up to the light. Maybe a lithophane in the bottom.

Unfortunately no lithophane. Thanks to everybody who replied to my original message. I am beginning to really like and appreciate Antiquers. So many friendly people prepared to pass on their expertise to somebody like me who is a novice.
