Is This a Sewing Tool...?

    This was Mom's...and for all I know it came from th' Old Country (Holland) with her 98 years ago.

    I'm usually good at understanding the design purpose when I see a tool, but the function of this twisted wire gadget escapes me fully.

    It's ~2⅞" long, made of .032" steel wire. The twist is center-reversed, as I've tried to show in the 2nd pic.

    As stumped as I am, I'm sure one of you will be familiar with it and have a name & purpose to share with me. Thanks for lookin'!
