    Hi all,

I would appreciate any opinions on age, what wood it is and possible origin. I was told that this armoire was Irish (?) and 19th century, but I’m not sure if it’s early, mid or late. Do you think it’s of any value? It splits into three parts. Please excuse kid mess in the photos! Any info appreciated :pompous:

That hardware looks 1860-ish - lovely piece, have no idea if it is Irish but that would not be the first thing that came to my mind ...I'm not familiar with the style so don't know.

Hm. Irish furniture of that period would be heavily influenced by English trends and I'm not seeing that. It's very pretty - less heavy than some of our stuff was. I do agree it's mid 19th or slightly later. I'm actually wondereing if it's Scandinavian, maybe Swedish.

Think 1880 or so. Pine does make me think Scandinavian in origin but certainly no expert here. Just know it is not American.

Thanks @verybrad! Am I right in thinking it has some kind of walnut veneer or am I out to lunch? image3.jpeg

You will not find that patterning on walnut or any other wood that I know ! All the same tone and scrolls and squiggles look like a child could have done it ! It is just a backdrop for the design on the front !
Not saying it isn`t a nice piece,, it is very nice and usable item ! Wood just does not grow like that ! My opinion ! They may be trying to replicate a curly maple or similar wood !

An attempt at grain painting that didn't turn out very well.

Yep, faux graining. Not necessarily a bad thing if in reasonably good condition, as this appears to be.

Anyone hazzard a guess as to what it might be worth? I paid a couple of hundred dollars for it!

Since these are large items and rarely used today I think you paid the correct amount ! However this one is more usable than most ! In my area between $200. and $300. would be about top price !
