Is this loveseat British Colonial? I posted a long time ago.

Since the table was shown that looks like it would match, I looked at some of the British Colonial sites that Marie recommended. I only know that I fell in love with this and brought it back from California. Someone on the Ebay forum said it had been sold in Louisiana and the shop in Calif. might have been the buyer. They didn't tell me the leg was broken and badly repaired. I'm still looking for a quality restorer that won't charge me an arm and a leg (pun intended) to fix it.

I do think colonial. There is also Dutch colonial furniture besides British. I am not sure where this one might have come from.

I think Latin America. (That head.) Brad, what type of wood would that be?

Looks to be mahogany. I do think the West Indies or Latin America to be distinct possibilities.

The head is a Colonial South American angel motif. Beneath it are carved banana leaves. The style is isabelino which is (roughly) equivalent to our Victorian period. Naive in design rather than sophisticated. I would call it a “tête-à-tête" rather than a love seat. As to origin, my feeling -- and it's just a feeling -- is Central American rather than South American. Certainly worth exploring further because there can't be a lot of antique furniture of this type around. (And why, oh, why can't people choose more "sympathetic" upholstery fabric. Fleur-de-lis? Jeez.)
