After years of discarding crosses in jewellery... I now have a crush on antique fine examples:hilarious:
I just bought this one, so, not in hands yet!

      • Length 9,2 cm x width 4,5 cm
      • Weight 46 grams
The pics here are those of the listing, seing the hand engraving on the metals, the "bolts" on back to hold the gilt (gold?) part, I made a bet, as it was only 30€...

Would you have bought it? What are your thoughts about what it will finally be after testing?

Oh dear, you sound like me! Warning, once you start, it never stops.:hilarious:
I my case I blame Schwäbisch Gmünd and those d... Austro-Hungarians.:arghh:
A good bet, imo. A very striking piece, and well made. A French seller? It looks French.
I think gold, a perfect touch to brighten it up, a very nice balance of austere and light, with good detailing.:)

I know... each of my collections began with one good piece, and that led me to search for more and more and more:facepalm::joyful:

I’m pretty confident it is gold and silver, the weight is surprising though... But the (French!) seller’s mesurements aren’t coherent with what I can mesure on the pics:bucktooth:

I knew you would appreciate this piece!

Ah! I wouldn’t mind finding this one: :woot::woot::woot:

    Forgot this, yes, I would.
Silver and gold. I only now noticed the black enamel, French imo.

    Nice one!
I have the same crush on crosses as you have!
Although during my teens/twenties I avoided them as much as I could.
I m sure I would have bought this one if I got the chance.

That is NICE! I have some crosses because as a practicing Christian I actually wear them. :) If I were guessing I'd say this one is late 19th century enameled silver with a gold accent layer. Meant to be a pendant, with the pin added later. It's actually a good thing. Put the necklace on and pin the cross in place to keep it from getting lost.

That's gonna look out of the park with the Silver areas cleaned, with a 3 tone gold silver and black

I love them also, on the lookout for a special one too

I don't like wearing pendants at all, but crosses just look great always

I think gold as well, and good size

    Great buy kyra

I'm not exactly of faith any more, but I do have some nice crosses. A couple of garnet ones, for a start. And my silver baby crucifix.

Another vote for gold & silver. What a striking piece; I would also have bought & added to my cross hoard. I’m not at all religious but do appreciate their beauty.
    @Ownedbybear Those are fantastic!

OH, Kyra, what you've bought is Stunning and can't wait to see what you do with it!!!! It looks like gold and silver with some blacking inset in the darker places..... to me....anxious to see when you have it in hand!!!!

But also, that VERY SHORT video blip was just an awful TEASE of the Scottish Museum conserving that WONDERFUL EARLY cross!!! I could watch those processes for hours....it's so fascinating to me to watch!!!!

Both mine were in charity shops and cheap as anything. Silver, hallmarked and Bohemian garnets. The blue stone in the first is, I think, a replacement but works rather well.

    Are we unknown twins?:joyful:
Sure we are competing on brooches and now crosses:eek::p
I'm an atheist, but I take as an excuse, if I needed one, crosses are related to my last name (aka priest as it translates in English )...

Nice! Wearing them as a Christian is the best thing to do :)
Your analysis of the piece is perfectly accurate!

Thank you Charlie! I think it will get a cautious cleaning-polishing, not sure if I'll try to remove the added brooch system...
