Just loved this when I saw it. I can’t see any lines it in at all.
Do you think it’s bone or ‘that of which we shall not speak’?
If it’s ivory I really hope you all think it’s old enough to be pre ban. Not that makes it any better but it’s so like my little pony in my avatar it had to come home with me!
    Thanks for looking :)

    I did wonder.

Is it cold? Looks more like glass or a carved stone.

I can't be 100% sure, but it seems to have tiny black spots in pic#6 between the mane and the brooch mount.:cyclops:
So... if these are there, I'd say bone. A CUTE OLD BONE CARVING OF AN EXQUISITE PONY!:woot:

He is quite cool. I'll test him with my (totally unreliable) gem tester.

Do you think it's ok to give him a quick wash as there is so much dirt it's tricky to know what's dirt and what isn't. Don't want to damage it though.

Aquitaine Is What It IS! But NEVER BORED!

Sure aren't any visible lines, but he sure is cute!!! If you look at his hooves in pictures #2, and #3.....they look almost translucent.....would that be with bone????

A quick wash with soapy tooth brush without soaking him then rinse under tap should be fine:)
Don't insist on mane and eye details, black could be intentional for the details:stop:
Dry him thoroughly with tissues and blow on the brooch junction!

Give him a go over with a wet cotton bud. Best thing is spit!

It is cute, K. With that gloss and some parts which seem slightly translucent, maybe molded and carved celluloid?
If it is celluloid, just use a moist cloth or moist cotton bud, almost dry. No spit or soap in that case.

    Ok, I'll go very carefully!.
Mary Contrary gem tester says glass but as she also says coral is glass I don't believe her. The seller rang me out of the blue to see 'how I was getting on with the replacement' as this is the second one I've had. When I said how bad it was he instantly offered to send me one from the new batch they are getting in mid month. I suspect this batch has dodgy software and he's had more than one unhappy customer. Considering how dismissive (rude) he was about my issues with the first one it seems odd he would now be so helpful.

P.s I've just had a look under a loupe and it's definitely carved and no sign of mould marks. Feels slightly heavy to be celluloid and more detailed than the ones I've googled. Can celluloid be hand carved?
Almost reminds me of netsuke type carving.
Even the underside of his hooves are carved with a little horseshoe shape!

I think someone has glued a pin back onto My Little Pony. I don't see ivory or bone. How is weight for size?

Biggest risk with washing is that the pin could come off.

Superb! Are you SURE the second one is celluloid? The patch pattern is VERY shell like:cyclops:
You know what... put your tongue:p on it to taste if chemical:joyful:

This is my chubby little (approx 1" x 1.5") carved ivory horse (and I am quite sure she is ivory), purchased new at a Chicago area import shop in the mid-late '60s, but not saying similar were not made earlier or later. Have seen similar pieces with added gold decoration and pendant bails, but can't recall seeing one with a pin-back attached...

I bought it when I was in my twenties, thinking it was tortoiseshell. Since then I have studied tortoiseshell and its lookalikes, and it turns out it is exquisitely carved celluloid.
I read somewhere that some of the famous Dutch ivory carvers (on a par with the Dieppe carvers) also went on to carve celluloid. This is a classic Dutch piece.:)
    Of course.:hungover:
