I came across this nifty looking shotgun. The top barrel is marked J MANTON LONDON FINE TWIST." When the shotgun is opened as to load, I can see a stamped "11151" inside the housing. Any idea when or what type of gun is this?

Just don’t try shooting modern shotgun shells in it.

Looks ok generally but the buggered screws probably limit the condition to NRA “good.” I’d think of it as a “wallhanger.”

Look on the breech for the proof-marks. They are small stamped marks that identify where it was proof fired, and if they are Liege marks it would be much less desirable that London proof..If it is also stamped 'Nitro' it should be safe with modern cartridges although originally made for black powder.
Proof marks may also be under the breech, so remove the fore-end, disconnect the barrel from the stock by opening the breech, and check under the breech.

Personally I'd hang it on a wall, but even I've heard of Manton's.

For anyone who didn’t read the discussion at one of the links above, the “expert” (?) there said the marks on the shotgun aren’t correct Manson marks but were used by someone else unknown, without permission. I dunno nuffin’ ‘bout dat.

For the linkophobes, here’s the pertinent info from the other thread:

“AceMedic: Your shotgun has Birmingham, England proof marks.

None of my references indicate that J. Manton and J. Manton London Fine Twist markings are attributable to any specific maker.

My references do indicate that other unknown English makers used the Manton name and I can only surmise that your shotgun was made by one of these unknown makers.

Shotguns with Twist Composite Steel barrels are not considered safe to use with modern ammunition.

Retail value for a gun in the condition shown would range from $100 to $200 depending on mechanical and bore condition.”

I wouldn't have much use for the gun, but

I could find a good home for this too. Honestly. No problem.
