Am I correct that there are 2 holes that run along the sides from stem to stern? Not the correct arrangement for a netsuke. What is the size? You will receive other opinions but does not look like jade to me. More like serpentine.

Yes, you are right about the holes. The size of the turtle is 5x3.5 cm.

I suppose it could have been strung on cord as a necklace. I don't know what to make of the holes otherwise, unless an attempt to suggest a netsuke. It's around the right size.

Google translate gives back translation of "Li" for the mark on the base. Second most common surname in China.

Symbol looks like 佛, but I’m not 100% sure

When I hand drew it into Google Translate - it came up with 俫 - which is "Li".

Edit - 佛 would be Buddha? I guess that could make sense too.

it's not traditional but could still operate as a netskue..of a sort...

Possibly used in macrame...I recently had a Jorge Wilmot Tonala Turtle with holes just along the top and it was for macrame,
