Hi all, picked up this lovely little thing yesterday.I have no idea what it is,or if its even old,but Im a sucker for miniature anything. I couldnt scratch it with a penknife, doesnt that mean it might be jade? Its 1 1/2 inches high, beautifully carved and any input is always appreciated.

It comes off the wooden stand? At that size, I'd think it was a chop seal without the seal on the base. I have a carved ivory one missing the seal.

Thanks, Bev! I tried google images, but I didnt find one exactly like mine, though some were very close. Its so hard to tell wether Chinese stuff was made yesterday or 500 years ago !

I know. The Chinese and the Indians and Middle Easterners still make the same items the way they've made them for hundreds of years so it is often very hard to tell.

Might be quartz. The question is: was it carved with electric tools? Can't tell from the photos.

The Chinese automated jade/stone carving years ago, they can make a dozen or more a day, someone carving by hand would take days for one piece.See 2 minute video.....

Looking at the bottom I tend to agree that it may be quartz rather then Jade. But that's just a guess.

Do you know anyone with a gem tester? That should help.

Even if jade the chinese have mastered how to alter, color and false age items. I live in Hong Kong and you can see them on the street and almost all markets. I agree it looks like a seal. I have 1 similiar from 30’s or 40’s but shorter with a seal attatched and a metal case.

When i buy things chinese i buy it with the concept of if i like it not resale because theres a good chance its fake or lower quality than presented.
