    Hi all,

I bought this Japanese Charger at an auction here in the UK recently. I didn't pay a lot of money for it, £10 only.

It measures not quite 12 inches across so perhaps charger is stretching the description a little :D

Does anyone know what the symbols stand for and perhaps a possible date range for this piece please as I have tried researching it online and am just stunned at how many pottery marks there are for this type of item.

Thanking you in advance for any information that you may be able to give me about it.

    Regards - Sy

The mark is a apocryphal Chenghua mark, which appears on Chinese and Japanese porcelain. I am not sure where your charger comes from, but I tend to believe it is Chinese. The mark does not help dating your piece, it is certainly not Ming...

Thank you for the fast reply, your information helps because I don't know anything about oriental pottery apart from what you have just told me....and the fact I knew it wasn't Ming ha ha ...... many thanks again.

Any time I see that even, heavy crackling I immediately get suspicious.

Agree with Johnny. The crazing/crackling looks to be intentional. The blue decor appears to be over the crazing/crackling. The crazing is done to make it look older than it is. It could be fairly new

It's pretty though, so if the OP likes it and is going to use it for decoration 10 quid isn't a high price. It doesn't look old to me either.

Hmmm, I did write and publish a reply shortly before Eve posted hers and I definitely saw it on here but it seems to have gone for some reason.

In essence what I said was that the crazing does seem to be under the glaze after closer inspection and when i run my fingernail over the glaze it is totally smooth so I agree with your opinions that this is a repro, but I like it a lot and £10 was a bargain really then still I think. I have also learnt a lesson today on something to look out for in the future, so thank you all again for the information.
