Featured Japanese Lacquer Bowl

Bought this bowl today. It's crazed (but not all and uniformly crazed), with a hand painted picture of a samurai and a woman on the inside. No marks. Looks like the residue of a round sticker on the bottom. It's a light robin's egg blue, with a slight greyish undertone. Very light weight, and appears to be made of wood on the inside. Any ideas of age? 20180419_183000.jpg 20180419_183102.jpg 20180419_183038.jpg 20180419_183027.jpg 20180419_183017.jpg 20180419_183008.jpg

I can't find anything like it online. I'm not even sure if it's Japanese.

    It is beautiful.
I haven't seen one like it either, but the style, and details of hair and clothing look good to me.
The crane is a symbol of fortune and longevity. It also features on many wedding kimonos, as a symbol of wedded bliss and fidelity. The pine tree is one of the symbols of the Buddha.
The woman is holding a wicker(?) tray and is pulling the samurai's sleeve. It is probably a scene from a Japanese story. We could use the help of our enthusiastic Japanese member nokita, who has disappeared.....() I miss nokita.

Its probably later than Taisho period / Era or later still. Not traditional style

Stick it on the Asian art forum and three or four experts will assess it in a jiff

Taisho is 1912-26. Could be, given the aging of the lacquer.
    Which Asian art forum?

    Really, David?
If that was directed at me, feel free to correct my English anytime. But if you do, please try to be polite about it.

So glad you avoided using four word sentences.:)

There are Asian art forums which are not pretentious, I don't know if that one really is. Looking at the thread titles on that particular forum, four word requests do get answered, even one word requests.
Many threads don't get any answer, regardless of the number of words in the title. Some on very straight-forward subjects, which would get answered here. I noticed that before, btw.

I saved a link to another Asian arts forum, regarding Chinese Archaic jades, can't seem to find it now.
But since the one David mentioned doesn't seem to have a problem with four word sentences at all, they are probably not as pretentious as he would like to suggest.

Four wonderful words, and I agree 100%.

I posted some answers on the Asian arts forum to questions that remained unanswered so far, or weren't answered fully or correctly. I may have included four word sentences, I didn't check.:nailbiting:
It could take some time before they show. The moderators read everything first because they've been having a spam problem.
I'll let you know if I have been blacklisted.:D:jimlad:

I have the feeling that they're probably perfectly nice and polite people, It's unfortunate that David described them as otherwise .. and made unwarrented comments to AJ,which annoyed me immensely... anyway I will now get on with the joyful perusing of this forum :) :) ... Joy.

    @Huntingtreasure :hilarious:
    D. didn't mention four letter words, just four word sentences, so you should be fine even if you do.:hilarious:
Seriously, it seems a perfectly normal forum. But not a community like ours. This is a second home.
