Hello all I picked this up the other day and am trying to find out more about it.
What i know is it is 9" tall, Missing the top. Has lacquer tiles that slide in, Three are missing.
Made entirely of wood with brass embellishments.

Maybe in honor of the fellow in the picture (as opposed to a religious shrine?)

IIRC in Shinto it can be both. There's some Ancestor worship involved. So yep -family shrine.

That's very cool! So the writing on the front is his name?
There is other writing on the back of the first two tiles, the third is blank.

Probably a slot left for his wife, who was still kicking when this was made. It got out of the family before the inevitable happened, or else (sadly) there was no one to make sure she was added. Lots of Japanese couples these days don't have kids.
