I bought this at a thrift store. I know it has been (badly) painted. I was wondering if anyone knew how I could get the paint off and restore it to it's former glory? I know it won't be perfect... and I'm not trying to resell. Daffodils are my favorite. Thanks!

Seaweed, my best guess is that the person who painted this (and, it seems, fancied up the lining) probably did so because the original finish was "shot". Often, when you find these little boxes today, most of the original silver plating is gone.

I'm sure you could remove the paint, one way or another, but I doubt there's much hope of bringing it back to its "former glory".

    Hi,
Spray it with a Sterling Silver type of paint. Not just a silver paint but there is a sterling silver which looks like Sterling.

    Think the lining is original.

I thought maybe the cording around the edge of the lining might have been added(?) I have several of these old caskets, and none of them has cording like that - just the satin lining itself.

I'm pretty sure the one I have at the store has cording in it.

I won't be back in the store until Monday. By then, I probably will have forgotten that I'm supposed to look. But if I remember, I will let you know.

Lacquer thinner should remove spray paint pretty easily.

    Think these are orchids.

Not that it really matters, but they look like bearded iris to me. Horticultural accuracy is frequently the sacrificial victim of art. :bored:

Look like orchids to me. :)

In Victorian times, orchids were a symbol of luxury and refined taste.
