Just got these nice looking Jorgen Baekmark chairs at my local flea market for $50 for the pair. They are in decent condition with some minor splitting on the back seat. I will repaint in original yellow. I would like your opinions regarding the spindles. 1) should I repaint in original yellow, or.... 2) stain the spindles with a nice darker finish to contrast the yellow I have seen some examples on the inter-web with no paint--lightly stained. Not a fan of that look. Thoughts?
I'd say , you do you !! what's to stop you from....say.. peach & pearl black & red navy & yellow red , white , & blue !!
unless they are expensive.... I see a nice flat canvas for whimsy and color.... "You", don't hold back !!! I think you can have fun with these !!!
Fantastic find in these great chairs! I love your idea of the darker finish on the spindles. Maybe a dark amber? Love Danish furniture. Hope to see the end result, whatever you decide.
Sharp *thumbs-yp* Well if you intend to keep them for yourself, I’d have to agree with @komokwa, “you do you”. You’ll enjoy them more. But I think you would degrade the resale value straying from the original designers intent. https://www.pamono.eu/mid-century-danish-modern-j104-spindleback-chairs-by-jorgen-baekmark-for-fdb-mobler-1969-set-of-2 https://www.1stdibs.com/furniture/s...ndle-back-chairs-denmark-1960s/id-f_35103572/ https://tiger-oak.com/products/1960s-j104-black-chairs-designed-by-jorgen-baekmark-a-pair https://www.chairish.com/product/10274640/1960s-j104-black-chairs-designed-by-jrgen-bkmark-a-pair
I agree re straying too far from designer's intent. Like colorizing an old b&w movie. But it does appear that his J104 chair was offered in other colors. Yellow, however, seems to be rare (according to the internet.) https://www.1stdibs.com/furniture/s...MWkNUNF9HSGp5bWtkN1RFMzYzUSZ0PUFBQUFBR2doWkNv Debora
I get the vibe yellow was not an original color, but can not see clearly via the photos. They were probably pure white originally from what I see. Spindles look like they were stripped already and last pic of bottom looks like possible overspray. The peeling also isn’t consistent with the quality finishing one would expect from Danish furniture.
These are the colors the chair is available in today. https://www.skandium.com/products/j104-chair?variant=40313287868519 Debora
thanks for all the replies. I'm gonna go with the original yellow and stain the spindles. I'll post pic's when (IF!! LOL) completed.
